Sligo town knew the Creans as merchants long before the wider world knew one as an explorer. This premium heritage woven blanket honors the Crean family crest against the Irish National Tartan.
The Crean Name in Ireland
The Irish form is Ó Croidheáin, a Connacht name that also anglicized as Crehan and, in Roscommon, as Cryan. In sixteenth-century Sligo town the O'Creans were leading merchants, prosperous enough to leave a carved family tomb in Sligo Abbey that still stands. The name's most famous bearer took it to the other end of the earth: Tom Crean of Annascaul, County Kerry, served on three Antarctic expeditions, including Shackleton's Endurance, and came home to open a pub called the South Pole Inn.
How the Crean Blanket Is Made
Woven construction rather than print. The crest and tartan exist in the cloth itself, worked in 100% premium cotton and finished with a traditional fringe.
