Creagh is one of the few Irish surnames that records a single afternoon. This premium heritage woven blanket honors the Creagh family crest against the Irish National Tartan.
The Creagh Name in Ireland
The Irish is Craobhach, from craobh, a branch. The tradition, recorded by Woulfe and repeated in every serious account of the name since, is that the Creaghs are a branch of the O'Neills of Clare, and that an ancestor took the cognomen after carrying a green branch into a battle fought at Limerick against the Danes. The family settled in Limerick as merchants and appear again and again in the city's lists of mayors and bailiffs. They also rose high in the church: William Creagh was Bishop of Limerick in 1459, David Creagh Archbishop of Cashel in 1483, Richard Creagh was appointed by the Pope to the primacy of Armagh a century later, and Pierce Creagh was Archbishop of Dublin at the beginning of the eighteenth century — all four of them Limerick men. A second wealthy Creagh merchant family established itself in Cork.
